Rayspan has developed and demonstrated working prototypes of two categories of proprietary metamaterial air interface products which offer breakthrough improvements in performance - and the company has two additional categories under development. The first two categories demonstrated were:


1. Metamaterial Antennas
The unique characteristics of metamaterials have enabled Rayspan to design and develop antennas with exceptional attributes:
  • Ultra-compact size, on the order of 1/10 of the wavelength of the operating frequency. Conventional antennas are typically half of the wavelength, or five times larger.
  • Single-antenna support of four to six frequency bands with multiple feeds that eliminate the need for splitter-diplexers.
  • Enhanced performance in mobile applications involving multipath propagation, with greatly reduced incidence of signal dropout.
  • Inherent support of all wireless standards.
  • Robust, easily implemented and cost effective.

The small size and multi-band capabilities of Rayspan's antennas will be of great benefit to manufacturers of fixed and mobile wireless terminals, allowing them to eliminate multiple large external and internal antennas while simultaneously supporting numerous frequency bands and achieving higher levels of mobile performance.

2. Metamaterial Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output Ultra-Compact Antenna Arrays
MIMO technology is essential to reach today's objectives for wireless network speed, reach and spectral efficiency, but it is extremely challenging to implement in compact mobile terminals due to its requirement for half-wave length antenna spacing. In a true breakthrough, Rayspan has developed proprietary ultra-compact metamaterial MIMO antenna arrays which are the first that can easily be adopted in small, sub-wavelength form-factors.
Rayspan's demonstrated metamaterial MIMO array enables:
  • Antenna spacing less than 1/6th of a wavelength, with minimal cross-correlation.
  • Antenna length less than 1/10th of a wavelength.
  • Excellent multipath performance and tolerance to in-band interference.
  • Ease of robust implementation and cost effectiveness

Rayspan believes that no other antenna system can provide equivalent small size and performance.
